Scritch (which means a deep, soothing scratch to show affection for your pet) is a new social media and pet parenting app. The Scritch App was created to help pet parents connect and organize their special family members' lives.
The challenge in designing this app was to create something that leveraged the latest in social media experiences and game loops to engage users over the long term while competing for attention with other social media platforms. In addition, the leadership team wanted to bring as many pet-parenting features into the app so pet parents could use it to find new places, manage documentation, share details about their pets with caregivers, and even partner with adoption agencies and foundations to match them with their next purfect companion.

1. The Challenge
- Attention Competition: Designing an app that could successfully compete for users' daily attention against major existing social media platforms.
- Feature Saturation: Integrating a wide array of pet-parenting tools (records, events, sharing, discovery) without creating a daunting or confusing user experience.
- Sustained Engagement: Implementing modern social media experiences and game loops to ensure long-term user retention and foster a thriving, photo-sharing community.
2. The Solution
- Community Feed: A dedicated, photo-centric social feed for pets, driven by an intricate logic and algorithm to ensure users consistently see diverse and engaging content.
- Gamification & Re-engagement: Integrated robust social engagement mechanics, including notifications, sponsored photo contests, scavenger hunts, and in-app social credit, designed to draw users back daily.
- Comprehensive Pet Management: A centralized hub to track all pet details, including care notes, records, medications, pet insurance information, and veterinarian details.
- Discovery & Sharing: A Nearby feature to help users find pet-friendly places and events, and easy-to-use sharing functions to securely send care notes or documents to sitters, groomers, or pet lodging.
- Adoption & Education: Partnership capabilities with adoption agencies and foundations to facilitate pet matching, alongside engaging educational content from trusted partners.
3. The Design Process
My contribution focused heavily on ensuring the feature set's complexity was delivered through simple, delightful, and intuitive flows.
A. Information Architecture & Segmentation
To prevent feature overload, we divided the app into specialized, easy-to-navigate sections, ensuring clear pathways for users, whether they were seeking social interaction or utility:
- Community: The social feed and engagement tools (contests, educational content).
- Discover: Location-based features (Nearby, Events) and adoption tools.
- Pets: The private management section for records and sharing.
B. Designing for Habit Formation (Gamification)
We employed a "game-loop" approach to drive daily engagement:
- Reward System: Implemented a system of in-app social credit and recognition for participation in contests and content creation.
- Prompting & Notifying: Designed a strategic notification framework to remind users of ongoing contests, new educational content, and social interactions, ensuring low-friction return to the app.
C. Seamless Sharing Workflow
A key utility feature was the ability to share pet information.
- UX Flow: Designed a secure, step-by-step process that allows pet owners to select specific documents or care notes and generate shareable links or secure views for authorized caregivers (sitters, vets), without exposing full records.
- UI Focus: Ensured the UI for the Pet Management section was clean, accessible, and prioritized clear organization of critical health and insurance documents.

4. Results & Project Impact
Scritch successfully launched and quickly established a vibrant user base, proving the viability of combining social media with essential pet-parenting tools.
- Community Growth: Rapidly took off, with the growing community sharing thousands of adorable photos and actively participating in contests.
- Engagement: The re-engagement notifications, contests, and gamification mechanics successfully bring pet parents into the app daily, indicating strong habit formation.
- Client Success: The re-engagement notifications, contests, and gamification mechanics successfully bring pet parents into the app daily, indicating strong habit formation.
Conclusion: Scritch is a powerful example of how user-centered design, when combined with effective gamification and thoughtful information architecture, can transform a standard utility app into a beloved, daily-use community platform.
